Site Description

Boonhill is a Ridge on the North Yorkshire Moors With an impressive outlook.

The slope is a mixture of grass, Heather and scrubs, with trees on the slope to the north & south. Its has a small flat takeoff and landing area near to the stone circle.

There is no agreed bottom landing area, and the land directly behind takeoff is under separate ownership, again with no agreement to use it, meaning good slope landing skills are essential.

The site has good potential downwind for XC flights, and it is suggested that only pilots planning to go XC use this site due to the above restrictions. The site can be quite thermic & turbulent at times

2. Basic Information

Grade of Pilot

We would suggest that only XC pilots use this site until we learn or about its characteristics
in various conditions.

Access

From the A170 roundabout in Kirbymoreside head north through the town centre, through Fadmoor on Boonhill Road until you reach Boonhill House Caravan site. Go past the house entrance on the left and turn next left into the farm yard. Once in the yard turn right and drive north along the track that leads to a limited parking area close to takeoff. In wet conditions it may be better to park in the yard and walk to takeoff.

There is no need to inform the land owner that you are going to go and fly

3. Site Rules and Guidance

1. Pilots must be current members

2. Carry proof of BHPA & Cayley membership

3. No teaching at this site

4. No dogs

Guidance & information

As mentioned earlier pilots need to be proficient at slope landings, due to lack on bottom landing area & restricted top landing. It may be possible to land on the access track depending on wind speed and direction, but great care would be needed to avoid turbulence.

The slope provides good lift in moderate breezes on none thermic days.

Light wind flying is not advisable due to landing options.

Care needed when flying due to trees on parts of the ridge.

Do not fly if there is shooting in the area
